Preview: Streaking FC Cincinnati await Nashville SC for Decision Day matchup

The Orange & Blue got a much-needed week’s rest, as they welcome Eastern Conference rivals and Supporters’ Shield winners Nashville SC on Saturday. FC Cincinnati will be looking to not only finish strong as they prepare for their fifth straight playoff appearance since 2022, Pat Noonan’s debut season, but also to avoid a play-in match.

They face a very tough test in a Nashville team that thumped them 4-0 in August. Possessing the league’s top defense and a prolific offense, Nashville will want to break the league record for most points in one season.

Nashville SC

In a sport span since July of 2024, head coach B.J. Callaghan has built a powerhouse. Nashville SC has already won the U.S. Open Cup in 2025 and the Supporters’ Shield in 2026, while setting club records this year in the following:

  • Most points in a season
  • Most wins in a season
  • Highest goal differential
  • Most goals scored

Nashville SC arrive at TQL Stadium as the clear class of MLS in 2026. The Supporters’ Shield winners have a 22-8-3 record, conceding just 25 goals all season. They enter Decision Day needing a draw or win to establish a new MLS single-season points record.

Their success has been built on a highly organized 4-2-3-1 shape that values defensive compactness, coordinated pressing, and ruthless efficiency in transition. While Nashville’s cumulative xG of 55.1 ranks only ninth in MLS, they have vastly outperformed that figure thanks to elite finishing, intelligent movement, and consistently winning key moments in both penalty boxes. Since the World Cup break, they have been particularly dominant, posting a 12-5-2 record while outscoring opponents 38-14.

What makes Nashville so dangerous is the combination of attacking quality and tactical discipline. Attacking midfielder Hany Mukhtar remains the centerpiece of everything they do, operating between the lines as both a creator and finisher.

FCC head coach Pat Noonan described Mukhtar as an exceptional player. “You watch closely his ability–forget time and space–but when he’s in duels, how he uses his body to gain an advantage, to attack the goal is very impressive. His balance, just having a feel for what a defender is going to do, what he needs to do to win that duel, and then attack with space. That to me sticks out in a way that I think creates more opportunities for himself and for his teammates.

“He’s been one of the top players in this league since he arrived.”

Nashville SC also benefit from a healthy roster entering the playoffs and from the support of players such as forwards Sam Surridge and Cristian Espinoza, who give them threats both centrally and out wide. Their 69 goals scored rank among the league’s best and reflect a side that can hurt opponents through sustained possession, quick counterattacks, or moments of individual brilliance.

Noonan emphasized on Thursday that, defensively, Nashville may be even more impressive. “I think, structurally, they’re like most teams that are good against the ball. There are good connections. They close the space as well as the ball moves. I think because of how they attack at times, they can counter-press in a really good way and eliminate being exposed in transition. And then when they have to defend deeper, I think they do a good job of getting that organization right and closing the ball.”

Noonan also noted that Nashville’s low shot-concession numbers stem from how collectively they close space and reduce opponents’ time to make decisions. That defensive organization has translated into the league’s best goals-against figure and has been the foundation of their championship-caliber season. For FC Cincinnati, the challenge will be finding ways to create quality chances against a team that rarely allows opponents comfortable attacking moments while still possessing enough attacking firepower to punish mistakes immediately.

FC Cincinnati Preview

FC Cincinnati enter Decision Day in a dramatically different position. While Nashville SC are pursuing history, Cincinnati are fighting to secure their playoff path after an uneven season marked by defensive instability. The Orange & Blue have scored 67 goals, fourth most in MLS, and generated an impressive 60.4 cumulative xG, fifth best in the league, underscoring the strength of their attack. However, they have also conceded 73 goals, the third-highest total in MLS, creating a season-long imbalance that has often forced the team into high-scoring matches, with the fan base always wondering if a last-minute goal by the opponent will turn a draw into a loss or a win into a draw.

Saturday’s stakes are enormous. A win ensures FCC does not have a play-in match, but a loss or draw opens up the possibility of not even hosting the play-in match.

Tactically, FC Cincinnati have remained largely committed to their three-center-back structure, typically deploying a 3-4-1-2 built around the creativity of Evander. The system allows Cincinnati to commit numbers forward and maximize the influence of their attacking talent, helping produce 67 goals and the fifth-highest xG total in MLS. At their best, the wingbacks provide width while Evander operates between the lines and links play to the forwards.

The challenge has been maintaining defensive stability behind the attack, particularly during stretches when injuries and rotation have disrupted the back line. Despite recent improvement, Cincinnati enter Decision Day still carrying one of the league’s poorest defensive records.

The defensive picture is improving, but injuries remain a concern heading into the regular-season finale. Miles Robinson is available after missing several weeks, but Nick Hagglund remains in concussion protocol and will not play. Julián Malatini is also unavailable, and Tyrell Malacia remains day-to-day.

There will be some potential milestones to watch for FCC:

  • Kevin Denkey is one goal away from tying the record for most goals in a season held by Brandon Vazquez, Luchiano Acosta, and Brenner, who all had 18 in different seasons.
  • Evander is two assists away from tying a single season assist contribution that was reached by Acosta and Evander himself at 19.
  • Tom Barlow could become just the second player in club history to appear in all 34 matches in a single MLS season, with Álvaro Barreal (2023) currently holding that honor.
  • Lastly, Roman Celentano enters Saturday with 49 career clean sheets in all competitions. He could become the first goalkeeper in club history to reach 50 clean sheets, as no other player in FCC’s MLS era has more than nine (Przemyslaw Tyton was at 9).

What to Expect

The contrast entering Decision Day could not be much sharper. Nashville SC arrive as Supporters’ Shield winners, chasing the record in most number of points in league history, while FCC are still fighting to secure a more favorable layoff position and to avoid dropping into the play-in round. Nashville’s league-best defense and tactical consistency will be tested by an FCC attack that remains among MLS’s most productive despite an uneven season and ongoing defensive concerns.

Ultimately, Saturday’s match feels like a playoff game before the playoffs, with Nashville seeking another milestone and Cincinnati looking to prove it can stand toe-to-toe with the league’s benchmark team as the postseason begins.
