The age-old maxim of “home-field advantage” has never been more self-proving as in the case of Nashville SC this season. Coming into Saturday night’s hosting of FC Cincinnati, the Boys in Gold had only dropped two points within the friendly confines of GEODIS Park this season, and that trend continued.
Both sides fielded a full-strength XI, with FCC hoping to bend the staunch Nashville defense under the strength of the dynamic trio of Evander, Kevin Denkey, and Kenji Mboma Dem. The hosts would field their winning formula, with the only change from the norm coming in the form of Reed Baker-Whiting starting in the place of Daniel Lovitz at left back.
First Half:
The opening 20 seconds of the match served as a perfect display of why Nashville currently sit 10 points clear in the Eastern Conference standings. From the jump their lethal combo of speed and superb technical ability immediately set FCC on their toes, with the heroics of Roman Celentano just keeping the scoreline at nil-nil.
With the opening sequence survived, The Orange and Blue were able to settle themselves a tad as the match progressed out of the infancy stage. However settling was the extent of their success in the first half, managing only one shot and that being from 30 yards out.
Despite the anemic offense, the defense put up a valiant effort for the majority of the first 45. Alas Nashville has proven to be inevitable this season, and would finally find a breakthrough in the 43rd minute. A fine bit of give-and-go between Cristian Espinoza and Andy Najar along the far wing opened the necessary space for the Argentine midfielder to whip a cross into the box, finding a rising Sam Surridge for the score.
Second Half:
FC Cincinnati made a pair of changes to begin the second half. Replacing Obi Nwobodo, who picked up a caution in the first half, with Bryan Ramirez. Additionally Ayoub Jabbari came on for Kenji Mboma-Dem, a move made in search of a spark that was clearly lacking in the opening frame.
Unfortunately these moves would prove to be superfluous. Just nine minutes into the second half a penetrating run and clinical cross from Elias Saad teed up Hany Mukhtar for the German forwards’ 10th goal of the campaign.
Despite a number of truly snake-bitten opportunities over the remainder of the match, FCC were unable to muster any offense capable of breaking the mighty Nashville backline. Despite the easy argument of needing to finish in key moments, there is something about being shut-out courtesy of some physics defying moments that truly smart in hindsight.
The hosts would not be content with their 2-0 advantage, as their lead would be doubled in the closing moments of the match. The first of the pair coming from newly subbed-on Bryan Acosta in the 90th minute, a missile that barely squeaked through the miasma of the box from a Mukhtar corner. The back-end of the pair would follow it’s fellow just six minutes on, when Ahmed Qasem took advantage of a fast-break opportunity to seal the deal.
Postgame:
All said, there is no denying the titan that is Nashville this season. The side from The Volunteer State has set an MLS record with their 52 points thus far, along with boasting the joint-best home record through 12 matches in league history.
This being said, FC Cincinnati has a lot of work before them should they hope to make a deep push into the playoffs. At night’s end The Orange and Blue sit in 6th, four points behind Charlotte at fourth, and holding a five point buffer from the play-in spots. The next two fixtures stand as perhaps two of the biggest of the campaign, as they welcome 11th place DC United into TQL Stadium next Saturday, before traveling to The City of Brotherly Love for a mid-week clash with 12th place Philadelphia on September 9th.
After a recent stretch of improved defense, the four goals conceded on the night are the most since May 13th versus Miami. Moreover, FCC was shutout for the first time since Matchday 3 versus Toronto.
