FC Cincinnati has officially announced the signing of Yamil Asad. His contract will run through this season, with an option for 2025.
“Yamil brings a great amount of experience and quality to FC Cincinnati,” Chris Albright, FC Cincinnati general manager, said. “He’s a creative and versatile player who will be a good fit with our group and I’d like to welcome him to the club.”
Asad had been without a club since December when DC United declined his contract option for the following season. Since last week, he has been training in Cincinnati to maintain his fitness.
Asad is a player with considerable experience in both Major League Soccer and abroad.
He started his career at Velez Sarsfield, like Luca Orellano and Alvaro Barreal, where he made 57 appearances, scoring four and assisting five.
In 2017, he went on loan to Atlanta United in their inaugural MLS season. In his short time there, he had seven goals and 11 assists in 33 matches.
After that season, he was loaned to D.C. United in 2018. He had nine goals and five assists in 31 matches.
He decided to stay at Velez at the beginning of 2019. He only made one more appearance though, and later ended up signing permanently with D.C. United in 2020. In two seasons there, he had five goals and three assists in 39 matches.
After a short stint for Chile’s Universidad Católica that resulted in one goal and no assists in 14 matches, he returned to DC for 2023. In that third stint, he had one goal and zero assists in 26 matches.
Asad is a player who is capable of playing in multiple positions. He has played as a left winger, attacking midfielder, right midfielder, right winger, left midfielder, central midfielder and striker. This versatility will certainly be helpful to Noonan and the rest of the squad.
It’s also helpful that he has already shared the field with some of FCC’s current players. He has experience playing with Luciano Acosta, and was at Atlanta with Miles Robinson and Alec Kann.
