FC Cincinnati announced their roster decisions for the remainder of the 2021 team. 17 players already under contract were retained. Right back Zico Bailey saw his option picked up after a strong finish to the 2021 season.

General Manager confirmed in his press conference earlier this week that the club picked up the purchase option on Ecuadorian center back Gustavo Vallecilla. He is expected to occupy a senior roster spot and have the U-22 designation limiting his cap hit.

“I’d like to thank each of these players for their contributions to FC Cincinnati,” said General Manager Chris Albright. “We remain in discussions with a few players who saw their contracts expire about their futures with FC Cincinnati, and we wish the players who are departing all the best moving forward.”

Few of these moves come as a surprise as the club notched their third wooden spoon in three seasons. The notable ommissions for the 2022 season include starting right back Joseph-Claude Gyau and Cincinnati native Nick Hagglund. Both are domestic players on club friendly contracts and could see a renegotiated deal worked out prior to the re-entry process.

Chris Albright still has several hurdles ahead of him to reshape the squad in his image for 2022. Technically the club has all three designated player spots (Brenner, Luciano Acosta, and Yuya Kubo) as well as most of the TAM spots occupied. One move you could see to create more cap space would be to use their one time contract buyout on a player like Kamohelo Mokotjo prior to the season. The club is also likely to pick up some international spots as players like Barreal, Harris, and Brenner are expected to pick up green cards.
