FC Cincinnati with a resounding 3-1 win over CF Montréal

FC Cincinnati, returning from a ten-day break, would net three goals for a resounding win away in Montréal.

FIRST HALF

Noonan opted to field the same lineup as their previous match, with a trio of center-backs in Engel, Miazga, and Flores. Santos was an injury scratch, while Kubo was back in the 18 after a few weeks of absence.

Upon kickoff, Cincinnati attempted  to get a hold of possession. But as the early minutes went on, they would begin to concede chances.

4’ SHOT: A quality free kick from Evander met the head of Gilberto Flores, but it was routinely handled by Jonathan Sirois.

6’ SHOT: A through ball from Caden Clark found the open run of Tom Pearce, whose shot went wayward—to say the least.

At this point, the right side looked exposed; Montréal was using that to their advantage.

18’ SHOT: Denkey’s hopeful shot was stifled by Sirois’ easy dive.

Near the halfway point of the first half, Cincinnati had been outplayed by a Montréal side that looked more organized—they appeared better on the ball and more threatening when going forward.

32’ SHOT: Another hopeful shot from Cincinnati. Luca Orellano’s dipper wasn’t quite troubling enough, being palmed away by Sirois.

In the 38th minute, Obinna Nwobodo was forced off with a no-contact injury. He had hyperextended for a ball.

45’ GOAL: Yedlin’s cross found Evander, who flicked the ball up and half volleyed it past Sirois. It was a Cincinnati opener, against the run of play.

At half-time, Montréal may have looked better with the ball, but they weren’t as clinical as Cincinnati. It was the one goal that made all the difference.

SECOND HALF

46’ SHOT: Not even a minute into the second half, another shot from Luca would force a save. But still no goal for him.

Caden Clark, who had been one of Montréal’s more productive players, limped off with an injury in the 54th minute.

59’ SHOT: Cincinnati looked dangerous in this attack. Still, it wouldn’t end with a goal, as Luca’s shot from an acute angle was straight into Sirois.

62’ SHOT: Denkey met Kei Kamara’s through ball, but a big chance was wasted by his scuffed shot. It wasn’t the first nor the last for him.

65’ GOAL: A quick counterattack ensued for Cincinnati; it was Luca who took on a few defenders, made a one-two with Evander, and let off a shot that was too powerful to save. His drought was over. A rare 2-0 lead for the visitors.

With two-thirds of the second half elapsed, Cincinnati looked as though they were settled, while Montréal seemed sluggish.

82’ SHOT: Kubo, on the half-turn, took a shot that was parried away by Sirois, who capped off his save tally at eight.

83’ GOAL: Engel used nifty footwork to get up the flank, playing a low-driven cross into the foot of Evander, who easily slotted it into the corner. 3-0 for Cincinnati, with a masterclass by their Brazilian maestro.

90’ GOAL: Out of nowhere, Sealy’s curling cross was domed into the top corner by Owusu. Montréal found their consolation goal.

90+2’ SHOT: It was a near 1v1 opportunity for Jules-Anthony Vilsaint, but Celentano came up big with the save.

Montréal falls further into rock bottom in the East in last place. This result keeps them three points away from Toronto, who have a match in-hand—they are all but out of contention, being 17 points off ninth place.

Cincinnati finally gets their elusive multi-score win, maintaining their spot at second in the East. They await a huge test with high-scoring Orlando this weekend.
