Soccer in Our Area – Newsletter vol. 8

The classrooms and halls of our local universities are filling with the hustle and bustle of young academics, but the NCAA soccer season are in full swing. At Cincinnati Soccer Talk we hope to bring you closer to the stories and action of our local soccer squads and players from this region. Join us as we do a quick recap of the previous week’s action and get you prepared for the week ahead.

Before we jump in, you might be wondering what this series considers regional teams. As a Cincinnati based publication of course our center point will be the Queen City herself. If you then draw a circle around Cincinnati using a 120 mile radius (roughly a two hour drive to any where from downtown) you come up with our region of coverage. This provides the best range of coverage to incorporate all D1 universities and clubs within a reasonable drive for first hand viewing and capture the interest of all those who make up our readership base due to our main subject, FC Cincinnati. Hope that clears things up!

Gem City Showdown

The 2025 campaigns for the Dayton Flyers and the Wright State Raiders started with their annual rivalry feud. After 90 minutes the Flyers walked away with bragging rights with a 2-0 victory. Sophomore Liv Grenda recorded one goal off one shot attempt. Grenda also was able to bag an assist on Olivia Baca’s 90th goal. The ex-Xavier forward, Baca, was able to inject offense to the Dayton attack providing eight shots on target from her ten total shots. Goalkeeper Kiera Sarka of Wright State tied her career high with 14 saves on the match.

War..CARDINAL?

The Louisville Cardinals had an ambitious couple of road matches facing SEC competition to start the season. The opener saw the Cards travel to the plains to take on the Auburn Tigers. Auburn’s typically good home form was challenged as Louisville became the first team to shutout the Tigers at their house in over a year. The break through goal came off a 72nd minute goal by four-year senior defender Hadley Snyder. Snyder’s low driven shot from outside the eighteen gave her first career goal. The stood as the game winner as the Cardinals defeated the Tigers 1-0.

Goals Galore

There were a ton of goals this weekend but I would like to drop a spotlight on the Kentucky Wildcats. In their two matches the Cats netted 11 goals. Sophomore forward Alexis Tylenda leads the way for Kentucky and has already matched her freshman totals of 3 goals and 1 assist. Sophomore defender Anna Sikorski has bagged herself 2 goals and an assist. While the competition hasn’t been the best Kentucky will face this season, it is promising that the Cats seem to have found scoring threats to replace last season’s departures.

Added Time

  • Dayton (W) went up to East Lansing to take on #12 Michigan State. The Flyers pulled off an impressive 0-0 road draw.
  • Former Anderson HS forward and HS All-American Lauren Flax got some minutes this week with the Liberty Flames. Her first touch on the ball was a upper 90 curler for her first collegiate goal.
  • Louisville City’s Phillip Goodrum and Jansen Wilson have had an incredible three match stretch. Each with goals a piece to give Lou City nine points.
  • After a rough spring, Lexington SC has been red hot in USL Championship play. They are now sitting above the playoff line.
