In early August, it was reported by Tom Bogert that FC Cincinnati were nearing a deal for Samuel Gidi. In the early hours of this morning, the club officially announced his acquisition as a U-22 player on a deal through 2028, with an option for 2029.

“We’re excited to add Samuel to the team,” Chris Albright, FC Cincinnati general manager, said in the news release. “He’s a talented midfielder with significant European experience despite his young age. His versatility across the midfield and strong mentality make him an excellent fit for our group. We look forward to welcoming him to Cincinnati.”

Gidi has played his entire career for Zilina in the Slovak First Football League. He grew up in the club’s Ghanaian affiliate, Zilina Africa, before he was recruited to the parent club and debuted at the ripe age of 18. He has since become one of the more talented central midfielders in his league.

He is a box-to-box midfielder who helps immensely on both sides of the pitch. He is able to break the press with his dribbling abilities, break lines with through balls, and has a considerable end product; on defense, he is a relentless ball winner.

Cincinnati has been in dire need of depth in that area of the pitch. A player of Gidi’s profile should be very useful to them, as they have often struggled to progress the ball through midfield. It is likely that with Nwododo’s absence, Gidi gets more minutes at the #6, but he is much more capable of being a backup #8 in a completely healthy squad.

Gidi will be available for selection in the coming weeks, pending his Visa approval. And even if it is just these last few matches down the stretch, it will be of much help to a contender with championship aspirations.
