5 Things to Know
Redemption – As much as everyone would like to forget our last trip to Bethlehem, there is no doubt that everyone wants redemption. It was a disappointing match that stirred a bit of panic for the Orange and Blue supporters. New man Justin Hoyte made his debut April 9th against the Steel but went down with an injury after fourteen minutes of play. Nearly nine minutes later, Paul Nicholson was shown red, leaving the club to finish the remaining sixty-seven minutes playing a man down.
Target Man- It’s obvious that we will have a new face in the starting eleven. With Djiby serving a six match suspension, we will not see him until June 10th. Koch will have no problem finding scoring options on this talent heavy roster. There is a good chance that Victor Mansaray will be given the opportunity up top. Andy Craven and Omar Cummings will also have the opportunity for more minutes.
Bottom feeders – Bethlehem Steel FC currently sit dead last in the Eastern Conference standings. With a negative two goal differential, their lone three points on the table came from an Orange and Blue gift. With a match against an angry Cincinnati squad Saturday, and a trip to Charleston the week after, do not expect any movement on the table for Bethlehem.
Dos – The Steel have scored two goals in three of their four matches this season. Pending we do not have to play a man down (knock on wood), I feel confident that our defense can put an end to the Steel scoring trend. Bethlehem has conceded three goals twice, with extra motivation, Koch and club will definitely be looking to increase that tally.
Make Slag out of the Steel – Steel FC should come into this Saturday’s match without the ability to call many Union players into the squad. The MLS parent club will face off in LA this weekend, likely giving the opportunity to the mainly younger, USL-signed squad. Look for attacking players Seku Conneh and Corey Brown to utilize their speed and athleticism on the counter. Midfielder Adam Najem to pull the strings and link chances together for the forwards and midfielder Marcus Epps. Veteran Midfielder James Chamber returned to the squad this week after spending the past month out on leave due to family reasons. Don’t look for Chambers to start, but he could bring the leadership this team needs to get back on track in 2017.
