The Northern Kentucky University women’s soccer team will represent the Greater Cincinnati area in the 2016 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament beginning this week.

The Norse (13-6-1) entered the Horizon League tournament as the # 3 seed and had to defeat Wright State (1-0) and Detroit Mercy (3-2) before taking on #1 U-W Milwaukee in the final. Their win marks NKU’s first Division 1 NCAA tournament berth in any sport after serving the mandatory 4-year probationary period after transitioning from Division II to Division I.

NKU conceded 2 early goals to Milwaukee in the 12th & 17th minutes. They looked to be in much trouble before coming back with goals in the 43rd and 66th minutes. The Norse secured the win with a 89th minute goal by Shawna Zaken.

Junior forward Jessica Frey was named the Horizon League Championship MVP after posting three goals and three assists across NKU’s three postseason matches. Junior forward Macy Hamblin, senior midfielder Katelyn Newton and freshman forward Shawna Zaken were also named to the All-Tournament team.

NKU will have a tough test as they face the #2 team in the country and Big XII champion West Virginia. The game time at Dick Dlesk Stadium, in Morgantown, W.Va. is TBD but more information can be found at nkunorse.com.

Make sure to support the Norse as they march on to their first NCAA Division I tournament!
